Clashes in Birgunj see one dead   [ 2007-2-4 ]

BIRGUNJ, Feb. 3: The clash between the police and the demonstrators of the Madhesi People’s Rights Forum here left at least one person dead and dozens injured.

Dipendra Saha Teli, 35, of Jhaibaguthi Madhwat died when police opened fire at a crowd that clashed with them at Radhemai.

Sanjaya Prasad Kanu, Ram Asish Pandit, Chandreshwor Rawat, Birendra Pandit and Ram Babu Kushwaha were seriously injured in the confrontation with the police at the New Bus Park, Nagawa, Gahawa. The injured have been airlifted to Kathmandu for treatment.

On the side of the security forces, Deputy Superintendent of Police of the Armed Police Force Bhanu Chandra Thapa, Nepal police inspector Ishwor Karki and Raj Kumar Shrestha, Gautam Mishra, Tek Bahadur Nepal, Rana Bahadur Tamang and Dharma Jit Malla sustained injuries.

According to Narayani Sub-regional Hospital, some 25 people were undergoing treatment there.

The situation in the town went out of control despite the local administration office imposing a curfew from 8 a. m. in the morning to 7 p. m. in the evening. The administration later extended the period of curfew till 10 p.m.

The MPRF activists defied protests and began protests from early morning in various parts of the country burning tyres.

The protestors also set fire to Birgunj Sugar Factory and Transport Management Office.
